The wild pastel lioness

She's mean in a nice way if you're a mate. Female lions do all the hard work, hunting and coddling.
I put this painting together using soft pastels, ink plus a little Conté pencil, without being too deliberate about it. Sometimes it just works if we JUST DO IT!

Pastel Red Sail

Keeping it simple - keeping it DIRECT - advice from John F. Carlson, artist. Do not think about it too much, let the juices flow naturally.

Allow the hand to make its own decisions. Trust it, then when done, stop your painting or drawing. That's IT. It is simple....

Bushman rock painting (pastel) by Ron Wilson

This rock painting exists somewhere in a cave in South Africa. I am impressed by the directness of Bushman art generally and I used pastel to emulate this ancient hunter with his bow and arrow.  Many years ago I photographed the original rock painting.  To copy the image in 2020, I used soft pastel on the back of a cereal box, it has a nice tooth and takes pastel very well. Size about 9 x 12 inches. Available.
