"Sunset, Makena Beach - Maui" 8 x 10 oil

Painted en plein air in Maui.
About an hour - I avoided looking directly at the sun setting over the ocean and I turned slightly to the right to paint this scene.

Gorgeous, bright colours. So different from your Canadian paintings.

Lucky you - enjoy the warmth. You may even have the opportunity to paint a volcano erupting!

Don't laugh, Mary-Anne - a volcano IS erupting on a neighbouring island but it has beeb active since the 1980's. Hou duimvas.

Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=488BkTUsMa4&tracker=False&NR=1&feature=fvwp to see video on YouTube of the Kilauea eruption this week on the Big Island in Hawaii. It's on a separate island from Maui.

Greetings from a fellow artist living in Bali...great sketch!..perhaps rework by toning down the sunset and water to heighten the solidity and deep colors of the cliff and house. Regards, Gene

Thanks Gene of Bali - I'm glad you commented on how the painting might be more effective - I wish more people would be frank about my work - I welcome good and adverse feedback, no problem, it helps me.

As for my choice of color, I think I was reacting to the scene emotionally and tried to express my response to it in flambouyant color.

Grateful, Ron in Maui
