This is a really good likeness to John. He always has a 'ruddy' complexion and you've caught his expression perfectly. Good job.

I don't know the sitter personally but I believe a portrait should reveal more than a likeness. We hardly ever see ourselves as others see us. Although John is gentle and at ease with himself, sideways on he shows a stubborn inner strength which the moving brush records without 'taking sides.'
